In the early 1990s scientists rediscovered their love affair with extracting hydrogen from water to create a clean and super-efficient fuel source. We all recall from chemistry class that water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen (H2O). From this simple compound it is possible to free up hydrogen bonds with simple electric charges.

Once freed this hydrogen is able to be used in much the same way as gasoline is. It is combined with oxygen and combusted in the engines combustion chamber. However, unlike gasoline, hydrogen burns cleaner and at a much lower temperature. This has several benefits including less ware and tear on the engine and lower greenhouse emissions.

As strange as it may seem, there are over 9000 cars ( and growing) on the road that use some combination of this technology. Most are operating as a kind of hydrogen - gasoline hybrid. This is where the extracted hydrogen is mixed with normal pump gas as a kind of supplement. The result is a sharp increase in gas mileage on the order of 30-50% or more. This hydrogen is extracted from the water using the electrical current from the cars battery. Then the hydrogen is shipped directly into the air intake where it is mixed withe the normal air/fuel mixture.

Use E85 Fuel In Your Car To Save Money? Read This First!

I was recently given a price of $912.90 to convert my 1994 Ford Taurus to be able to run on E85 (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline). The price included new, enlarged fuel injectors, an additional computer and a “re-flash” of the existing on-board computer. Given that E85 sells for approximately $.50 less per gallon than regular 85 octane gasoline sure seems like it could be something worth looking into. After all, some quick math revealed that while driving an average of 15,000 miles per year at 18 MPG (miles per gallon), I could save over $400 ($3,038 for gasoline @ 3.65/gal vs. $2,634 for E85 @ $3.16/gal). In just a little over two years, the conversion would be paid for with the savings in fuel costs at today’s prices and I would literally be “making money” from then on. But not so fast - there’s more to the story.

Ethanol (aka. “moonshine” or “white lightning”), a grain alcohol that is used for “adult” beverages and fuel, is fast becoming America’s “drop-in” replacement for conventional gasoline. Note that ethanol used for fuel is denatured, meaning that poison has been added so people can’t drink it. Since ethanol is made from plants such as corn and sugarcane rather than pumped from the ground as crude oil is, it can be labeled a “renewable resource.” Using today’s technology, gasoline refined from oil is considered a “non-renewable resource.”

Both ethanol and gasoline can be made to burn satisfactorily in today’s cars with one major caveat - due to the ethanol content, a gallon of E85 contains approximately 27% less energy than a gallon of regular gasoline, 81,000 BTUs vs 111,500 BTUs (gasoline). A BTU (British Thermal Unit) is a basic measure of heat energy. This means that more ethanol is needed to equal the energy content of regular gasoline. Gallon for gallon, an E85 powered car will travel about 27% fewer miles than an equivalent gasoline powered car. For example, your Suburban, which gets about 13 MPG in town on gasoline, will now go only about 9.5 miles on a gallon of E85.

With this new information, a re-calculation of our cost/benefit ratio is in order. While not widely realized by the general public, E85 energy content value at the pump should be reflected in a MPG/BTU adjusted price to compensate for its lower energy values. For this example, the MPG/BTU adjusted price for E85 is $4.16 per gallon, as more E85 would have to be burned to equal the actual MPG of gasoline. With this in mind, my annual E85 fuel costs for driving 15,000 miles at 18 MPG would be about $3,466, $400 more per year than plain, old gasoline. Which means that, after a $912.90 conversion plus over $800 additional fuel costs over two years, E85 would actually cost me over $1,700 more than plain, old gasoline.

Of course, if you think by coughing up the extra dough to go E85 you’re helping the environment by burning a renewable resource, think again. Some experts have estimated that using corn to make ethanol (as is the case in the US) for automobile fuel, it is possible that more fossil fuels (diesel and petroleum-based fertilizers) are used than the energy equivalent gained from the ethanol. How about lower emissions from E85 exhaust? Nope - any difference is negligible as todays gasoline cars are extremely clean-running machines.

Consider these facts the next time you think about an E85 conversion for your car, or even buying a flex-fuel car already designed to run on E85 - you could save thousands of dollars by making good decisions based on fact.

Does Running Your Car’s Air Conditioner Really Affect Gas Mileage

When it gets warm outside, your air conditioner becomes your best friend. This is most definitely true in your car, where temperatures can sky rocket to 170 degrees under direct sunlight. But most people these days are under the impression that the more you run your air conditioner the more gas your car will guzzle. Now that gas prices are higher than the cost to eat at McDonald’s, people are starting to take precautions and do what they can to help with their cars fuel economy. The assumption that running your air conditioner burns way more gas is somewhat untrue. Leaving your air conditioner off makes barely any difference in the amount of gas you burn. With the advent of modern, more fuel efficient cars, this myth is busted!

The air conditioner draws its power from the engine which uses some gas, but with today’s cars, this use of gas is minute. The air conditioner can decrease the fuel economy of your car up to 20% in some vehicles, but it depends on the type. Driving with the air conditioner is more fuel efficient than driving with the windows down. Driving with the windows down creates drag which means that your engine has to work harder to keep your car at the current speed; this burns more gas than if you just ran your air conditioner.

In the long run, using your air conditioner is far better than any other means of cooling yourself off in the car, unless you’re driving in traffic. When you drive in traffic you aren’t going very fast so the drag on the car is minimal. In these cases, you burn more fuel running the air conditioner than having the windows down. That makes sense. When you drive on the highway you can use either the air conditioner or the “window down” method to cool yourself, because, honestly, there is no noticeable difference in gas usage at those speeds.

Here are some tips about you and the heat in your car. Before you get into a hot car, roll down the windows and let it air out. There is nothing worse than getting into a hot car, sitting on a lava hot seat, touching a super hot steering wheel, and breathing stuffy super heated air. Your car needs some time to cool down for itself and for you. Once you believe it is cool enough to actually sit on the seat, turn on the car and run the air conditioner on recirculation. This will help the car cool down much quicker, and you can be on the road fast without sacrificing a layer of your precious skin.

So now that you know the air conditioner can be your fuel efficient friend, maybe you won’t be so quick to turn it off or ignore it in favor off putting the windows down and choking on bugs. The air conditioner in your car burns much less gas than your window method, so give your air conditioner a chance and be cool in the heat.

Warming Your Car In Winter Can Burn A Hole In Your Pocket

Winter can be a difficult time for car owners. Winter does it’s best to wreak havoc on your fuel economy. You may be an unwitting ally in hurting your fuel economy. How your car warms up in cold weather could burn a hole in your pocket.

The first thing you need to do in cold weather get out of the habit of letting your car warm up when you start it. Old cars may have needed some warm up time, today’s cars don’t.

Many drivers idle their car for 5 to 10 minutes in the winter to let their cars warm up. You should not let your car idle for more than 30 seconds. You need no more than 30 seconds of idling to circulate the engine oil before you can drive away on cold days

When you idle your car to warm it up you are burning gas but not going anywhere. When you let that happen you are getting zero miles per gallon. You may think that idling your car for few minutes or so is no big deal, think again.

To give yourself an idea about how much gas you would be burning by just letting your car idle for 5 minutes each time you start it think about this. Assume you idle for 5 minutes when you start your car in the morning. Assume you idle for 5 minutes again, sometime during the day when you start your car again to drive home.

That would be idling your car for 10 minutes per day. If we consider winter to be November, December, January and February, then winter would be considered to be 120 days long. If you idle your car for 10 minutes a day for 120 days that amounts to 1200 minutes of idling.

1200 Minutes of idling is equal to 20 hours. That means that by warming your car up by idling for only 5 minutes amounts to letting your car sit and idle, burning gas and going nowhere, for 20 hours. Would you ever let you car sit and idle for 20 hours? Of course not. Then why would you idle for the equivalent of 20 hours warming your car up if you don’t have to?

Warm your car up by driving it. To operate efficiently your car needs to warm up other parts in addition to the engine. Tires, transmission, wheel bearings and other moving parts also need to warm up. Your car’s catalytic converter doesn’t function at its peak until it reaches between 400°C and 800°C. The only way these other parts warm up is by driving. The reality is, to warm your car up completely you have to drive it anyway.

This is just one of the many simple adjustments you can make that will save you gas, save you money and help the environment without making any investment. All it takes is to readjust some habits. The number one gas saving device is you, the driver.

To save gas and increase gas mileage in the winter one of the simplest things you can do is warm your car by driving it, not by idling. Not only will it save you gas and money but you will also be doing something positive for the environment. That warm car will stop burning a hole in your pocket.
